Metadata is information about a data set. It describes the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data.

Metadata about spatial or map-related data sets are compiled in a standard format developed by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). Metadata reports compliant with the FGDC standard are currently provided for the following data sets:

Survey Documents

Orthophotography

Parcel Mapping

Resource Mapping and Other Metadata

Soil Mapping

The soils data displayed on this website are SSURGO data from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. For complete information about soils data consult the NRCS Web Soil Survey website and the USDA Geospatial Data Gateway website. The Web Soil Survey site allows users to generate soil survey reports and find additional information about soils. The Geospatial Data Gateway allows users to download tabular and spatial soils data. SSURGO soils metadata is available at the Geospatial Data Gateway and also at the following links:

In 1970 and 1971, the U.S. Department of Agriculture published soil surveys for all seven counties in the Southeastern Wisconsin Region. The text and tables of the published soil surveys are available in PDF format at the following links:
