Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of a set of diagrams containing control survey information for the Southeastern Wisconsin Region. The information on the Control Survey Summary Diagrams is compiled from the records of U.S. Public Land Survey System (USPLSS) survey control stations, also known as dossier sheets. Each diagram covers six USPLSS sections, and shows the location and type of monument for all section, quarter-section, and center of section corners in the six-section area. The diagrams also show the northings, eastings, and elevations (orthometric heights) of the corners, and grid and ground level distances and grid bearings of all USPLSS section and quarter-section lines. The interior angles and calculated acreage of each USPLSS quarter section is also shown on the diagrams.
Purpose:
This data set provides basic monumentation and control survey information for the development of large-scale topographic mapping, cadastral mapping, aerial orthophotography and other resource mapping, and for the conduct of engineering and land surveys.

There are no legal prerequisites for accessing this data set. Potential users should contact the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.
Use_Constraints:
The elevations of the U.S. Public Land Survey System corner monuments shown on the CSSDs should not be used in the field unless they have been checked against the applicable reference bench marks set for each corner as indicated on the dossier sheet.

2.  Data_Quality_Information:

Logical_Consistency_Report:
The land and control survey information shown on the Control Survey Summary Diagrams was obtained by high-order horizontal and vertical control surveys. The horizontal and vertical control survey accuracy conforms to specifications set forth in "Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks" prepared by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS). The horizontal control survey data meet Third Order Class I NGS standards; the vertical control survey data meet Second Order Class II NGS standards.
Completeness_Report:
This data set contains control survey information about U.S. Public Land Survey System features in the Southeastern Wisconsin Region. The information is compiled from surveyor's dossier sheets prepared for monumented USPLSS corners. As of December, 2002, land and control survey work has been completed for approximately 90 percent of the seven-county Region. Therefore, the information on the Control Survey Summary Diagrams is also complete for about 90 percent of the Region.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the horizontal control surveys from which this data set is derived conforms to the specifications for National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Third Order Class I accuracy for traverses as set forth in "Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks" prepared by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the vertical control surveys from which this data set is derived are such that all differential level circuits are of Second Order Class II accuracy as set forth in "Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks" prepared by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey.

Surveyor's dossier sheets provided the information from which the data on the Control Survey Summary Diagrams are compiled
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The Control Survey Summary Diagrams were prepared by compilation using the data contained on the dossier sheets (also known as records of U.S. Public Land Survey System [USPLSS] control stations). The location of USPLSS corners, expressed in State Plane Coordinates, were taken from the dossier sheets and plotted on stable-based mylar media. USPLSS section and quarter-section lines were drawn between monument locations. Annotation such as northings, eastings, and elevations were added for each corner, and ground and grid level distances and bearings were added for each section and quarter-section line. Interior angles between USPLSS lines and the acreage of each quarter section were calculated and added to the hardcopy Control Survey Summary Diagrams.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This data set consists of a set of diagrams containing control survey information for the seven-county Southeastern Wisconsin Region. The information on the Control Survey Summary Diagrams (CSSDs) is summarized from the records of U.S. Public Land Survey System (USPLSS) survey control stations, also known as dossier sheets.

Each diagram covers six USPLSS sections, and shows the computed grid lengths and the grid bearings of the exterior boundaries of each USPLSS quarter section; all monuments erected; the number of degrees, minutes, and seconds in the interior angles of each quarter section; the State Plane Coordinates of all quarter-section corners, together with their USPLSS identification; the elevations (orthometric heights) of all monuments; and the basic control stations established by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and utilized to tie the public land survey corners to the geodetic control datum, together with the coordinates of those stations. The angle between geodetic and grid bearing is shown, as is the combination scale and sea level reduction factor used to convert grid to horizontal ground level distances. The theta angle and combination scale and sea level reduction factor shown on the diagrams are computed for the coordinated one-quarter section corner nearest the geographic center of the six-section area of each diagram. In addition, the diagrams show the area in acres of the USPLSS quarter sections surveyed as computed using ground level distances.

The full set of Control Survey Summary Diagrams consists of 632 documents. The CSSDs are available in hardcopy format on 11-inch by 17-inch paper media. The CSSDs are also available in digital format as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
