Description:
Abstract:
This data set consists of a set of documents containing control survey information for U.S. Public Land Survey System (USPLSS) corners in the Southeastern Wisconsin Region. The dossier sheets are records for USPLSS corners --- section, quarter-section, and center of section corners. The dossier sheets are prepared on 8-1/2-inch by 11-inch drafting film and contain an identification of the corner and a sketch of the corner monument in relation to important features in its immediate vicinity. The dossier sheets show all witness monuments and bench marks together with ties to the corner, corner coordinates and elevations (orthometric heights), and contain a surveyor's affidavit describing the circumstances of the restoration or establishment and monumentation of the corner. The dossier sheets also contain the land surveyor's registration seal and signature.
Purpose:
This data set provides basic control survey information for the development of base mapping, aerial orthophotography and other large-scale mapping, and for the conduct of engineering and land surveys.

Access_Constraints:
There are no legal prerequisites for accessing this data set. Potential users should contact the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission or the local County surveyor.
Use_Constraints:
The dossier sheets indicate the location and surroundings of the corner monumentation at the time of survey, and may not reflect current conditions. Site investigation may be necessary to determine current condition of the monumentation. Certain of these corners lie on private property and users should obtain permission from property owners before attempting to recover and use the monument.

2.  Data_Quality_Information:

Logical_Consistency_Report:
The control station information shown on the dossier sheets was obtained by high order horizontal and vertical control surveys. The horizontal and vertical control survey accuracy conforms to specifications set forth in "Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks" prepared by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS). The horizontal control survey data meet Third Order Class I NGS standards; the vertical control survey data meet Second Order Class II NGS standards.
Completeness_Report:
This data set contains control survey information about U.S. Public Land Survey System corners in the Southeastern Wisconsin Region. As of December, 2002, land and control survey work has been completed for approximately 90 percent of the seven-county Region. Therefore, dossier sheets have also been completed for about 90 percent of the Region.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the horizontal control surveys recorded on the dossier sheets conforms to the specifications for U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Third Order Class I accuracy for traverses as set forth in "Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks" prepared by the NGS.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The accuracy of the vertical control surveys recorded on the dossier sheets are such that all differential level circuits are of Second Order Class II accuracy as set forth in "Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks" prepared by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This data set consists of a set of documents containing control survey information about U.S. Public Land Survey System (USPLSS) corners in the Southeastern Wisconsin Region. The dossier sheets are also called records of USPLSS control stations. Each dossier sheet contains the following information:

Identification of the USPLSS corner; a sketch for each station showing the monument erected in relation to the pertinent features of the immediate vicinity; all witness monuments, together with the attendant ties to the corner; the USPLSS description of the corner; the bench mark elevation of the monument; the elevation of a supplementary bench mark in the immediate vicinity of the monument; the bearing to an azimuth mark visible from the station (where practical); a surveyor's affidavit indicating whether the corner was restored through acceptance of a found perpetuated location or through acceptance of an obliterated evidence location, or was reestablished by lost corner proportionate measurement, and describing any record evidence, monument evidence, occupational evidence, testimonial evidence, or other material evidence considered in the location, and whether the monument was found as placed. The affadavit also identifies any material discrepancies between the corner as restored or reestablished and the corner as previously located.

The dossier sheets are recorded with the city or village engineer, the County Surveyor, the County Highway Department, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation District Office, and the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.

The dossier sheets are available in hardcopy format on 8-1/2-inch by 11-inch paper media. The dossiers are also available in digital format as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
